“I will come to you”

Revelation 3:20 KJV  Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

We were supposed to go home in 1888.

Whose fault is it that we are still here?

 We may have to remain here in this world because of insubordination many more years, as did the children of Israel; but for Christ’s sake, His people should not add sin to sin by charging God with the consequence of their own wrong course of action.  {20MR 313.1  1901}

How are we being insubordinate?  What is it that has kept us here?

 It is the unbelief, the worldliness, unconsecration, and strife among the Lord’s professed people that have kept us in this world of sin and sorrow so many years…. – {Mar 19.3}

And to that I will add it is also in believing in a pagan tradition called the trinity, and a false gospel that excuses sin as impossible to overcome until Jesus comes and He causes us to stop sinning somehow.  These are the root causes of all that afflicts Seventh-day Adventism.  We are opening the door to the wrong Christ?

Now lets get back to Rev 3:20 which portrays Christ as standing at the door of our heart knocking.  Why doesn’t Christ just enter our hearts?  Why does He stand outside knocking?

How willing is Christ to take possession of the soul temple if we will let Him! He is represented as waiting and knocking at the door of the heart. Then why does He not enter? It is because the love of sin has closed the door of the heart. As soon as we consent to give sin up, to acknowledge our guilt, the barrier is removed between the soul and the Saviour. – {1SM 325.3}

So what is that closed door?

It is the love of sin.  The love of being loved by the rest of so called Christianity which is apostate Protestantism and the Papacy.   It is loving the temptations of Satan to worship another god called the trinity which is really Satan.

So how do we open that closed door?

In order to let Jesus into our hearts, we must stop sinning. The only definition for sin that we have in the Bible is that it is the transgression of the law. – ST March 3, 1890 Par. 3

We must consent to give sin up, that is the first step to stop sinning.  1 John 1:9 outlines the process of giving sin up.

1 John 1:9 KJV  If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In order to cleanse us from all unrighteousness does Jesus have to have our entire heart?

Jesus invites us to accept His presence; we are to open the door of the heart, and let Him in. But He will not share a divided heart. If it be given to the service of mammon, if selfishness and pride fill its chambers, there will be no room for the heavenly Guest; He will not take up His abode with us until the soul-temple has been emptied and cleansed. – OHC 55.4

Who will not be allowed into Heaven?  Who only will be in Heaven?

Revelation 21:27 KJV  And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

Can the insubordinate, rebellious sinner be allowed into Heaven?

The Lord cannot give those who are insubordinate a place in his kingdom of peace. Satan and the angels that united with him were expelled from heaven because of insubordination, and men who choose evil rather than righteousness, unite with the great rebel, and they can no more enter the kingdom of God with their characters wholly unlike God’s, than can Satan himself become an inhabitant of heaven. – {ST April 27, 1891 Par. 3} – ST April 27, 1891 Par. 3

Surely we are not insubordinate, rebellious sinners.  Do we need to be purified and sanctified?

My brethren, clear away the rubbish from the door of the heart, and let Jesus come in and talk with you. Let Him sit upon the throne of the heart. If ever a people needed the purifying, sanctifying influence of the truth of the living God, it is the Seventh-day Adventists. – GCB April 14, 1903 Par. 47

Whether you think of yourself as a SDA or not, it is us who need sanctifying!

Who is it that sanctifies us?

The door of the heart must be opened to the Holy Spirit, for this is the sanctifier, and the truth is the medium. – RC 199.4

If it is the Holy Spirit that sanctifies us then what is Christ’s role in our sanctification?

1 John 1:7 KJV  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Would you agree that sanctifying and cleansing are the same thing, then how is it that Christ and the Holy Spirit are found to be doing the same thing?

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Thus the world’s Redeemer illustrates the work of the Holy Spirit upon the human heart. – 1888 666.2

What is the impartation of Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the breath of spiritual life in the soul. The impartation of the Spirit is the impartation of the life of Christ. It imbues the receiver with the attributes of Christ. Only those who are thus taught of God, those who possess the inward working of the Spirit, and in whose life the Christ-life is manifested, are to stand as representative men, to minister in behalf of the church.  {DA 805.3}

What is the life of Christ?

 Christ gives them the breath of His own spirit, the life of His own life.  {DA 827.3}

Who did Christ promise would come to us?

John 14:18 KJV  I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

It is Christ himself, in His Spirit form, who comes to us as the Comforter, not another being.

There is no comforter like Christ, so tender and so true. He is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. {OFC 210.6}

Since Christ is the Comforter, who is the Holy Spirit?

 2 Corinthians 3:17 KJV  Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

 “The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ, which is sent to all men to give them sufficiency, that through His grace we might be complete in Him. The Lord has provided that we should always be under the teaching and influence of the Holy Spirit.”  Manuscript Releases, Vol. 14, 84.3 – 1894

How is it that Christ is the Holy Spirit?

“Cumbered with humanity, Christ could not be in every place personally; therefore it was altogether for their advantage that He should leave them, go to His father, and send the Holy Spirit to be His successor on earth. The Holy Spirit is Himself [Christ] divested of the personality of humanity and independent thereof. He would represent Himself [Christ] as present in all places by His Holy Spirit, as the Omnipresent.”  Manuscript Releases, Vol. 14, p. 23 — 1895

This means that Christ can dwell in your heart as well as mine at the same time.

Is it possible that all the fullness of the Godhead can dwell in us, so that we can overcome as Christ overcame?

 In Christ dwelt the fullness of the Godhead bodily. This is why, although He was tempted in all points like as we are, He stood before the world, from His first entrance into it, untainted by corruption, though surrounded by it. Are we not also to become partakers of that fullness, and is it not thus, and thus only, that we can overcome as He overcame?  {7BC 907.5}

In whom does Christ as the Holy Spirit abide?

The Holy Spirit ever abides with him who is seeking for perfection of Christian character. {OFC 211.1}

Who must abide in us in order for us to obtain perfection of Christian character?

Colossians 1:27 KJV  To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

When do we need to reflect the image of Jesus fully?

I also saw that many do not realize what they must be in order to live in the sight of the Lord without a high priest in the sanctuary through the time of trouble. Those who receive the seal of the living God and are protected in the time of trouble must reflect the image of Jesus fully.  {EW 71.1}

When do we need to obtain the victory over every besetment?

I saw that none could share the “refreshing” unless they obtain the victory over every besetment, over pride, selfishness, love of the world, and over every wrong word and action. {EW 71.2}

When will it be to late?

Those who refuse to be hewed by the prophets and fail to purify their souls in obeying the whole truth, and who are willing to believe that their condition is far better than it really is, will come up to the time of the falling of the plagues, and then see that they needed to be hewed and squared for the building. But there will be no time then to do it and no Mediator to plead their cause before the Father.  {EW 71.2}

In 1905 William Boardman’s book “The Higher Christians Life” was widely circulated among evangelicals and in Battle Creek. Below is the quote from William Boardman’s book. Compare and contrast Boardman’s description of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with Ellen White’s description of the Holy Spirit. Note in particular that Boardman concludes with “living persons of the living God” and Ellen White concludes with “three living personalities of the heavenly trio.
