In the spectrum of human creeds there are two domains of sin; original sin and actual sin. It is under these two domains of sin that we find most of the defining statements on sin. Our focus in this study will be on original sin. Here is a sampling of the Catholic creeds on original sin…

The Catholic Creed on Original Sin

402 All men are implicated in Adam’s sin, as St. Paul affirms: “By one man’s disobedience many (that is, all men) were made sinners”: “sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned.”289 The Apostle contrasts the universality of sin and death with the universality of salvation in Christ. “Then as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men.” [Ro 5:18]

404 How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam “as one body of one man”.293 By this “unity of the human race” all men are implicated in Adam’s sin, as all are implicated in Christ’s justice. Still, the transmission of original sin is a mystery that we cannot fully understand. But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state.294 It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called “sin” only in an analogical sense: it is a sin “contracted” and not “committed” – a state and not an act.[1]

419 “We therefore hold, with the Council of Trent, that original sin is transmitted with human nature, “by propagation, not by imitation” and that it is. . . ‘proper to each'” (Paul VI, CPG § 16).

As we can see the doctrine of original sin is a broad teaching that is multi-faceted with elements of truth blended with elements of error. Scripture is the only way to distill truth from error. This doctrine is like pack of regular candy mixed with drug laced candy. Thankfully if we have a firm understanding of Scripture we can separate truth from error as easily as oil and water.

  • The element of original sin found in Scripture are:

Adam and Eve transmitted human nature that is weakened, wounded and inclined to sin (concupiscence).

  1. The elements of original sin NOT found in Scripture are:
  2. The sin of Adam became the sin of all his descendants.
  3. All are implicated in Adam’s sin.
  • Sin is transmitted by propagation not by imitation.

It is easy to see that Adam and eve transmitted human nature that is weakened wounded and inclined to sin. Paul writes 1Co 15:49  And as we bore the image of the earthy man, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

1Co 15:42-44  ….It is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.

However ideas that the sin of Adam became the sin of all his descendants and that all are implicated in Adam’s sin, advocates that we are charged with sin by propagation and genetic transmission. It advocates that in the divine government drug addicted infants are given the drug charges of the mother. However most theologians don’t stop with the mother and her lifetime of sins they pile on all the accumulated lifetime of sins of all the ancestry to Adam.

“People are sinners for two reasons. People are sinners because they inherited sin, and that because their nature and because they chose to sin.  Alright, so that means that I am a sinner even if I had managed to never sin, I am still a sinner.  You know why?  Because I inherited sin from my parents,  and they from their parents and they from their parents, and they from their parents and so forth.  And I am the accumulation of that.” –Ron Clouzet DMin Prophecies Decoded:  Presentation 7  “A New Revelation Of Jesus Christ” at 44 min. and 50 sec

What this theology advocates is that you and I are charged with sin unconditionally, without any volition, without actually choosing to sin. In this theology not only do we have [1]a body that is sown in corruption, dishonor and weakness but “Your birth certificate is proof of your guilt.” (Adult Sabbath School Quarterly, Job – Lesson 8, Monday 11.14.2016 by Clifford Goldstein)

  1. The Protestant view of Original Sin, Total Depravity

The protestant reformers from the 16th century onward introduced new terminology for the doctrine of original sin, total depravity. “The doctrine of total depravity reflects the Reformed viewpoint of original sin.[2] The reformers blend fallen nature with the guilt of sin in a way that makes it impossible to be completely set free from sin.

  1. Reformation theology teaches, “original sin has to do with the fallen nature of mankind.” The Bible clearly teaches that [we are flesh and blood] and we have the law of sin our members that we are sown in corruption, weakness and dishonor. There is no controversy on this point.
  2. The other feature of total depravity that the Bible does not teach is “WE ARE NOT SINNERS BECAUSE WE SIN. WE SIN BECAUSE WE ARE SINNERS.” —R.C. SPROUL

This un-Biblical teaching is expressed in this way:

  1. “The will of man is no longer in its pristine state of moral power. The will, according to the New Testament, is now in bondage. We are enslaved to the evil impulses and desires of our hearts.”
  2. “We need to be regenerated, to be made over again, to be quickened by the power of the Spirit. The only way in which a person can escape this radical situation is by the Holy Spirit’s changing the core, the heart. However, even that change does not instantly vanquish sin.”
  3. “The complete elimination of sin awaits our glorification in heaven.”

Let’s compare these ideas with Scripture.

  1. Yes the will is in bondage until; the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus set me free from the law of sin and of death. (Rom 8:1)
  2. We cannot deny that “we need to be regenerated and made over again”, but must we deny the power of God? Paul tells us in Php 2:13 “for it is God who is working in you both to will and to work for the sake of His good pleasure.” We know that the law of God is weak through the flesh but we are told, Rom 8:3 For the Law being powerless, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and concerning sin, condemned sin in the flesh, Rom 8:4  so that the righteous demand of the Law might be fulfilled in us, those not walking according to flesh, but according to Spirit.” The theology of the reformers tells us, “However, even that change does not instantly vanquish sin.” The Bible says the opposite: Rom 6:18  And having been set free from sin, you were enslaved to righteousness.”  It is true that change does not instantly make us mature or perfect in the stature of Christ but it does “set free from sin.”
  3. The deadliest doctrine is that “The complete elimination of sin awaits our glorification in heaven.” The Bible tell us the opposite: Rom 6:22 But now having been set free from sin, and having been enslaved to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end everlasting life.” When are we set free from sin? Now, not at our glorification. In fact John perfectly concurs with the apostle Paul when he writes “Everyone who has been begotten of God does not sin, because His seed abides in him, and he is not able to sin, because he has been born of God.” 1 Jn 3:9

[1] Instead of, “not only are we born in a body that is sown in corruption…,”

  1. Now this is the Biblical view of sin, our ancestry and our nature.

Sin entered the world through one man (Ro 5.12) and these are the results

We are sold under sin (Ro 3.9, 7:14, Galatians 3.22). We are under the power of sin.

We are shut up or enclosed in unbelief and disobedience (Ro 11.32). Like a drug addicted baby we are helpless and hopeless without intervention, but drug addicted infants are not charged with drug crimes.

We are made, appointed or caused to be sinners (Ro 5.19). We are caused to be sinners by Adam’s disobedience but we are not charged with sin unconditionally or without our choice. [We are charged with sin when we meet the conditions for being charged with sin, when we know right from wrong, when we know the law. 1.16.2018]

Our bodies are sown in corruption, weakness, and dishonor, bearing the image of the earthly man (1 Corinthians 15:40-49).

We have sin dwelling in us (Ro 7:17) & The law of sin in our members (Ro 7.23). We are not born in the way God originally designed [us].

Sin reigned in death (Ro 5.21). Though some parish without the law most will be judged by the law (Ro 2:12) and at the end of the thousand years those whose names are not written in the book of life will die the second death (Revelation 20:9-15).

For sin was in the world until the law, but sin is not charged where there is no law (Ro 5.13). Why? Because sin is the transgression of the law (1 John 3:4)

  1. As a review here are the Scripture misapplied to the doctrine of inherited

Rom 5:18  So then, as through one deviation it was toward all men to condemnation, so also through one righteous act toward all men to justification of life.

Rom 5:19  For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were constituted sinners, so also through the obedience of the One the many shall be constituted righteous.

Adam and Christ bring two opposing offers to all men. Adam’s exclusive offer is sin and disobedience and Christ’s exclusive offer is righteousness and obedience. Both Adam and Christ caused these two warring principles to enter the world and even into our nature. The problem is we tend to confuse cause with conditions and effects. We reason that, Adam did cause all to inherit this corrupt body, and the effects seem to appear involuntarily and unconditionally, we tend to think our nature, our bodies sown in dishonor, our very DNA is charged with sin. We are not charged with sin involuntarily or unconditionally, any more than we are saved from sin involuntarily or unconditionally. Notice that Roman 5:19 does not say…

Rom 5:19  For as through the one man’s disobedience…all men are implicated in Adam’s sin

Neither does it say…

Rom 5:19  For as through the one man’s disobedience…sin is transmitted with human nature, “by propagation, not by imitation

Neither does it say…

Rom 5:19  For as through the one man’s disobediencethey sinned in him, when they had as yet no actual existence  (John Gill’s Exposition of the Bible)

Do these teachings reflect what we have been given in Scripture?

2Chronicles 25:4   “…The fathers shall not die for the sons, and the sons shall not die for the fathers; but they each shall die for his own sin.

Contrasting Bible Truth and Human Fables

In brief, these teaching are not supported by Scripture: The sin of Adam became the sin of all his descendants. 2.  All are implicated in Adam’s sin. 3. Sin is transmitted by propagation not by imitation.

This teaching is supported by Scripture: Eze 18:20  The soul that sins, it shall die. A son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. And a father shall not bear the iniquity of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him.

Deu 24:16  The fathers shall not die for sons, and sons shall not die for fathers; they each shall die for his own sin.

Everything that Adam offers through his disobedience, Christ has counter-offered through His perfect obedience.

Adam Caused                                       Christ Caused

Sin entered the world through one man (Ro 5.12)

Joh 3:16  For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that everyone believing into Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  Joh 3:17  For God did not send His Son into the world that He might judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

Mat 1:21  And she will bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins

2Co 5:19  as, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not charging their deviations to them, and having put the Word of reconciliation in us.  2Co 5:21  For He made the One who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

We are sold under sin (Ro 3.9, 7:14, Galatians 3.22).

1Co 6:20  You were bought with a price; then glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are of God.

We are shut up or enclosed in unbelief and disobedience (Ro 11.32).

Rom 11:32  ….that He may show mercy to all.

We were made, appointed or caused to be sinners (Ro 5.19).

Rom 5:19  … so also through the obedience of the One the many shall be constituted righteous.

Our bodies are sown in corruption, weakness, and dishonor, bearing the image of the earthly man (1 Corinthians 15:40-49).

Right now we who Ro 6:5 “have been joined together in the likeness of His death, so also shall we be in the resurrection,” Rom 6:6  knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be nullified, so that we no longer serve sin. Rom 6:7  For the one that died has been justified from sin. Even though we have been sown in corruption and dishonor, Paul tells us…

At the Coming of Christ our bodies will be

1Co 15:42   raised in incorruption.

1Co 15:43  …raised in glory… raised in power.

1Co 15:44  …. raised a spiritual body

1Co 15:49  …. we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man.

We have sin dwelling in us (Ro 7:17) & The law of sin in our members (Ro 7.23).

Rom 6:13  Neither present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as one living from the dead, and your members instruments of righteousness to God. Rom 6:22  But now having been set free from sin, and having been enslaved to God, you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end everlasting life. Rom 8:2  For the Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus set me free from the law of sin and of death.

Sin reigned in death (Ro 5.21).

…so also grace might rule through righteousness to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Ro 5:21)

For sin was in the world until the law, but sin is not charged where there is no law (Ro 5.13).

Rom 3:21  But now a righteousness of God has been revealed apart from Law, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, Rom 3:22  even the righteousness of God through faith of Jesus Christ toward all and upon all those believing; for there is no difference, ,

Adam and Eve transmitted human nature that is weakened, wounded and inclined to sin (concupiscence).

2Pe 1:3  As His divine power has given to us all things pertaining to life and godliness through the full knowledge of the One calling us through glory and virtue,  2Pe 1:4  by which means He has given to us the very great and precious promises, so that through these you might be partakers of the divine nature, escaping from the corruption in the world by lust. Gal 3:29  And if you are of Christ, then you are a seed of Abraham, even heirs according to promise Rom 8:17  And if children, also heirs; truly heirs of God, and joint-heirs of Christ, if indeed we suffer together, that we may also be glorified together.
